Social Trend Watch – Edition 10

What To Make Of Elon Musk Buying-up Twitter Shares

So Elon Musk now owns a 9.2% stake in Twitter...and whilst his stake is quote ‘passive‘, i.e. no board seat or voting rights, rumours are circulating that Musk could make a bigger move to take more active control to reposition and upgrade the platform.

Good thing all the rumours are true, and the above original PR information is already out of date because as of April 5th, Musk was asked to join the TW board of directors, to which he then declined…

Musk has taken to the platform in recent weeks, sharing Polls such as this Tweet, which accumulated over 2 million votes.

Whilst $3 billion for Musk is not a significant portion of his net worth, even so from a business perspective, you would assume that Musk has some angle here, a potential pathway to re-igniting TW’s growth and maximizing this investment?

Musk’s Twitter tale is far from over, alongside what having Musk as a shareholder truly means for the platform in the coming months/years. Make sure to check out the ever-evolving situation and key information points here (04/04), here (05/04) and here (10/04).

TikTok Trend – My Boss Told Me To Go Viral

Posted on Monday, the trend has pushed JD’s following to 1.7M followers and generated 1.2M video views.

Whilst this brand TikTok trend has been around for a while, it has recently started to gain traction again with JD Sports following on from their successful hashtag campaign and recent big-name signing of influencer Chunkz to their ambassador programme with this TikTok.

Featuring Social Execs/Managers pushing the strong on asset CTA of My Boss/Manager wants me to hit X followers“, however, JD has added a slight twist with a prize incentive of a £1K JD gift card to some lucky new followers, using the comments section to slide into winners DM’s.

This trend also manifests itself in the form of:

  • Trying to go viral on TikTok without using any of the sounds
  • Trying to understand the algorithm
  • My Boss said I can have a raise if we go viral

A key, reactive pain point for many brands on the platform is that they currently cannot use any licensed sounds for their content. A couple of brands hopping on this trend include:

  • Air Baltic – here
  • Astrid and Miyu – here
  • Duolingo – here – the legal team continuing to feature is the real spotlight in this content trend because the CEO is clearly happy to keep using trending/licensed sounds…
  • Ryanair – here – okay this video is not quite the trend above, but a very similar CTA and the comments section is a gold mine for the best of the best brand community management responses.

Merger Update – Welcome Warner Bros. Discovery

It’s official the dotted line has been signed, and the new plc. of Warner Bros. Discovery formed.

On Day 1, the David Zaslav-run corporation (estimated market cap: $45 billion-$60 billion) is not a current threat to Disney (market cap: $240 billion) or Netflix (market cap: $161 billion), but the new publicly-traded company now ranks as number three.

Only so many merger opportunities now remain, with Disney’s size and market domination due in large part to its purchasing of Fox Corp for $71 billion in 2019outbidding Comcast which acquired NBCUniversal for around $14 billion in 2013, andComcast also moved on to buy Sky for $39 billion, which strengthened its overseas presence.

Also don’t mind Amazon chipping away in the background, with their $8.5 billion acquisition of MGM, their biggest acquisition to date and providing a deep library and unique opportunities. Read more on the acquisition and Entertainment marketplace mergers here.

La Liga Clash Between Real Sociedad vs Real Betis To Be Streamed Live on Gol’s TikTok

Spanish broadcasters Gol have confirmed this 6th vs 5th top of the table clash will be shown live through their TikTok account, with the 4K coverage starting from 19:30 GMT.

Gol claim it is the first La Liga match to be broadcast this way, and the first game from a major European league to be shown live through TikTok.

Alfredo Bermejo, Director of Digital Strategy at La Liga has said:

  • “This is another step for La Liga in the quest to build new audiences and bring football to viewers everywhere”

This agreement with TikTok confirms the efforts of both LaLiga and Mediapro in recent seasons to continue creating value and innovating match broadcasts. As these activations become more frequent across global sporting events, will streaming services start to see their market share and subscribers gradually start to diminish and lose out to free streaming platforms like TikTok, Clubhouse and new emerging AI platforms?

Real Betis, managed by former Manchester City and West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini, head into the match two points clear of sixth-place Real Sociedad and four behind fourth-place Sevilla in the final Champions League spot, so this top of the table clash promises to be a great streaming offering of Spanish and European Football for global viewers.
